2024 ASLA Iowa Awards Gala

The ASLA Iowa Chapter will be hosting our 2024 Awards Gala on the evening of September 17th, 2024 starting at 4:00PM at Wilson’s Orchard & Farm in Cumming, Iowa.

The order of events for the evening include:

4:00-5:00 CEU Presentation - “Framing Cultural + Biological Capacities for Development through Integrated Water Management”

5:00-6:00 Social Hour

6:00 Dinner Served

6:45 - 8:00 Presentation of Awards

A plated dinner will be provided, with options of:

  • Chickpea Stuffed Squash with Cinnamon Rice and Wilted Greens (GF, DF, V)

  • Roasted Salmon with White Beans and Lemon-Radish Salad (GF, DF)

  • Sirloin with Potato Gratin, Lemon Roasted Broccoli, and Cabernet Beef Jus (GF), or

  • Roasted Chicken with Heirloom Corn Grits, Sherry Jus, and Sweetcorn Chow Chow (GF)

Individual ticket, individual ticket plus one, or a table reservation of 8 are available for registration. Table reservations will be assigned to the front of the space. Registrations are due by September 3rd to confirm catering. Join your ASLA Iowa Chapter members to honor this year’s award recipients. Feel free to invite your award-winning clients, as well! About the CEU:

Framing Cultural + Biological Capacities for Development through Integrated Water Management

Craig Clarkson, PE - Sherwood Engineers

Stephanie Fleckenstien, PE - Sherwood Engineers

This session will delve into the relationship between cultural and biological capacities in development through the lens of integrated water management. By examining the broader implications of these challenges, the session will highlight how new lenses in responsive infrastructure and nature-based solutions are transforming our approach to sustainable development. Participants will gain insights into the importance of considering both the hydrologic and bio-urbanism cycles in planning and implementing development projects.

Using two Iowa / Des Moines metro case studies, Middlebrook and the Market District, we will illustrate practical applications of integrated water management in diverse contexts. The Middlebrook case study will focus on large-scale greenfield sites and their potential for innovative green infrastructure solutions. The Market District case study will highlight the challenges and opportunities in urban redevelopment, particularly in light of that project shifting stormwater requirements. Through these examples, we will discuss opportunities in integrated water and water reuse, emphasizing the circular economy principles in urban metabolism planning. Attendees will leave with a deeper understanding of how these strategies can be applied to create resilient and sustainable district and landscape systems.

The ASLA Iowa Chapter will be hosting the 2024 annual golf outing on Friday, May 17, 2024 at Blank Golf Course in Des Moines, IA.

Mini Golf is available for those who would like to join the fun but prefer not to golf!

Light breakfast and check in 7:30AM, shotgun start 8:00AM. Those playing mini golf can plan to arrive anytime that morning and then stay to join the group for lunch and prizes.

ASLA Iowa has partnered with our legislative liaisons, Cope Murphy + Co., to once again host an ASLA-Iowa exclusive Legislative Breakfast. This event is scheduled for Thursday, March 21, 2024 in the Capitol Rotunda from 7-9 AM.  The breakfast is an excellent opportunity to meet with our elected officials face-to-face and to inform them of the many positive ways landscape architecture impacts, provides value and solutions for our state.  

SCHEDULE:       
7:00am – Setup of booths
7:30am – Coffee, juice, croissants served in Rotunda.  Firms begin one-on-one discussions with their legislators
9:00am - Begin wrapping up our day on the Hill

A plated buffet of chicken, steak, salad, variety of vegetables along with appetizers, fruit, dessert and beverage will be provided.
